Apply to the Downtown Dance Festival
![]() |
As BDC tries to explore new locations and themes downtown, the program this year will be unconventional. Due to this, we will not be accepting new proposals for the 2013 festival. We plan to return to a more eclectic scenario and feature 15-20 artistically and ethnically diverse companies in 2014. The call for applications will be announced in mid-January, 2014.

Can I drop my application off instead of mailing it? Absolutely. You can drop your application off during business hours, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm after January 20, 2014. What are the dates of the Festival? The next Festival will take place in August 10-16, 2013. Can I submit my DVD and other promo materials now? No, please wait until the application form is released in January to submit your materials. Can I send you a link to our work on Youtube or another video sharing site? At this time we can only accept DVDs The application specifies a 10 minute clip—does the piece I present have to be less than 10 minutes? You can submit a piece of any length to be considered for the Festival. Due to time constraints during the review process, we are only able to screen 10 minutes of the piece you submit. If you would like us to watch a specific 10 minute segment of a longer piece, please make a note on your application form, or cue your DVD accordingly. You can submit as many works as you’d like, but keep in mind that we will only be able to watch 10 minutes of your work, total. If you submit two pieces, we will watch 5 minutes of each piece, etc. I want to perform a new work for the festival/I am in the process of creating a new work that I would like to perform at the Festival. What should I submit? If you are in the process of developing a new work, please submit rehearsal footage with notes. If you would like to perform a totally new work, please submit a different piece that best represents your work, along with a description of the new work (number of dancers, mood, style, etc). If I am selected, how long will be performance slot be? Once we have made final decisions, we will have a better idea of how long each performance slot will be. Slots are usually 20-30 minutes in length, but if you would like to perform a shorter piece, you are not required to use all the time you are given. I missed the deadline, can I still submit? Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications we receive each year, we are unable to accept late applications. When will I find out if my work has been selected? Applications are due towards the end of March. After the application process has closed, it takes about three weeks to convene our judging panel and notify you. How will I be notified about decisions? If you have been selected, we will contact you immediately via the e-mail address listed on your application. If we were unable to include your work, we will send a formal letter to the mailing address on your application form. If you would like us to return your materials, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your application. If you include an envelope without any postage, we will not be able to return your materials by mail. Please make sure the size of the envelope and postage amount reflect the size/weight of the materials sent. Alternatively, you can come by the office any time during business hours to pick up your materials. Is there a stipend for participants? We are able to offer a small stipend to each participating company. The stipend is the same for everyone, regardless of the number of dancers in your company. Please note that the stipend is grant-dependent, and we frequently do not receive the money for the stipend until the festival has passed. My dance company is not based in New York. We do not have funding for travel or accommodation. If you have any other questions, contact Deputy Director for Domestic Programs Elena Ryabova at elena@batterydance.org. |
